Marbles

I once knew a woman
who kept me from losing
The marbles that roll in my head
She rushed to be near me
And tried hard to hear me
When nobody cared what I said

There were times when I looked on her face and believed
The sun rose and set in her eyes
But now that she's left me I can't help from seeing
The world spinning each time I cry

We once traveled to Boston
For half of what it costed
A telephone number and friends
We danced in the darkness; the night was a fortress
And somehow we just let it end

There were times when I looked on her face and believed
The sun rose and set in her eyes
But now that she's left me I can't help from seeing
The world spinning each time I cry

Yes, I once knew a woman
who kept me from losing
The marbles that roll in my head
She rushed to be near me
And tried hard to hear me
When nobody cared what I said

Philadelphiaville

My head keeps breaking cover
Down in Philadelphiaville
Where the summer washes humid
What the winter bites to chill
My dreams float out on the river
They dance a shimmer 'neath my eyes
From the west bank of the Schuylkill
Watching day float into night
And it all seemed so believable
My poetry was real
The Boggieman sang from the sillouettes
Of the headstones on the hill
And what the man conceived as exodus
You know the woman feels as thrill
Oh, you can see your life as a fairy tale
Down in Philadelphiaville

Once upon a time,
In a land not far from ours
Two men made an evening date
To play beneath the stars
The Weasle and Gallute their names
Strings on wood their trade
And when the stood upright in the naked light
Sweet Posey Music made
Repression first, then second hand
No better friend had I
Tripping up and down the Rocky steps
With the ice cubes in ours eyes
Oh but the castles we could see from there
The ones the waking man leaves still
The dreamers dream and then can touch
Down in Philadelphiaville

Now Philadelphiaville can be just like Hell
Where the Merchants have no heart
All gold to smelt the fatted calf
Maybe a coin or two for Art
"Yes, we'll let you sing tonight
and may your sounds be good
For it's silver that warms my dreary nights
You two can have your stings and wood."
Lonliness so hard to hide
Though Paradise is fair
The Wealse and Gallute had both
Seen enough to dare
They played as though the world would end
With Judgement soon to come
They played for the tears and the dust to mud
Man, they plaayed it all for fun
And what the man conceived as exodus
You know the woman feels as thrill
Oh, you can see your life as a fairy tale
Down in Philadelphiaville

Though Art was born that dreary night
The miser Dobbs looked ill
For the beggars that they sang about
Left nothing in his till
"What good has this that bears no gold
A value that's well known
I'm going to pay you half of what I said
Boys, that's twice what you have shown."
The Weasel and Gallute could see through
Miser Dobbs like glass
Then Weasle said, "Hey, next time you're down
Why don't you stop and kiss my ass."
What happened next was rather grim
As the strongarms soon appeared
The Tribe of Satyr shown the door
Like a head blown off a beer
Oh but the castles that they showed to us
The ones the waking man leaves still
The dreamers dream and then can touch
Down in Philadelphiaville

Those merry men still play around
Down in Philadelphiaville
Where the summer washes humid
What the winter bites to chill
And my dreams still float  on the river
They dance a shimmer 'neath my eyes
From the west bank of the Schuylkill
Watching day float into night
It still seems so believable
My poetry is real
As the Boggieman sings from the sillouettes
Of the headstones on the hill
And what the man conceived as exodus
You know the woman feels as thrill
Oh, you can see your life as a fairy tale
Down in Philadelphiaville

Patty's Composure

Captivated by a face with eyes that kept me on my toes

I sat alone with a heart from Hollywood

A heart near everybody knows

Will always show the years the best she can

And smile when it looks like rain

And when the skies pour down making mud from the ground

You know she’ll smile at me just the same

And she’ll say

“Life can be good when you fall in love

And it’s great when you’ve got your friends

And when you learn to live, forgive and forget

You’ll be remembered in the end.”

I’ve spent some time as a would be has been

Scrapping meals off the heels of a dream

Oh, it’s fun on the run, shooting cupcakes at the sun

But it’s not quite as warm as it seems

Until you hit the sucker square between the eyes of perfection

I’m talking God, I know he’s not that far

And when His eyes pour down making muid from the ground

He’ll build a fire for the broken hearts

And He’ll say,

“Life can be good when you fall in love

And it’s great when you’ve got your friends

And when you learn to live, forgive and forget

You’ll be remembered in the end.”

I’ve got a feeling in my heart, how I’m afraid

My tongue’s been twisted in so many ways

Oh, but my heart’s much younger than the muscle in my tongue

And, hell, it’s my muscle anyway,

So I’ll say,

“Life can be good when you fall in love

And it’s great when you’ve got your friends

And when you learn to live, forgive and forget

You’ll be remembered in the end.”

Simple Folk

I'll love in the daytime, I'll love you in the nite
I'll love when it's wrong and I'll love you when it's right
I'll love you when you dance with me and sing my simple song
I'll love you now and thru my whole life long

I'll love you when the sun is shinning, I'll love you when it rains
I'll love you when the truth I hold evident begins to change
I'll love when you shake your finger swear I am unkind
I'll love you now and thru the end of time

I'll love you when you long brown hair is brittle, short and gray
I'll love you when the fire in your eyes fades away
I'll love you when the Preacher sayds, "My friends, it's time to pray"
I'll love you now and 'till your final day

And when I'm judged and old St. Peter reads my resume
And says, "My friend, this is mighty close, but D+ makes the grade."
I'll have to stop and say to him. "Hey, Pete, won't you please be kind,
And tell me where that's life long friend of mine"

I'll love in the daytime, I'll love you in the nite
I'll love when it's wrong and I'll love you when it's right
I'll love you when you dance with me and sing my simple song
I'll love you now and thru my whole life long

Anne Marie -- Live

The golden circle lights the sky
I wash my face and wonder why
She loves me
I brush my teeth and comb my hair
And waste upon the water chair
She loves me
Anne Marie loving me in the morning
Anne Marie loving me at noon
Anne Marie loving me in the evening
And I love her, too

My days consist of simple chores
To save the world and sweep the floors
She loves me
And I continue all the while
I think of her and I can smile
She loves me
Anne Marie loving me in the morning
Anne Marie loving me at noon
Anne Marie loving me in the evening
And I love her, too

The silver circle dims the sky
I shut my eyes and wonder why
She loves me
And as my consciousness expires
My dreams all gather 'round the fire
She loves me
Anne Marie loving me in the morning
Anne Marie loving me at noon
Anne Marie loving me in the evening
And I love her, too

The Bum & I

There's a part of me living on a steam vent
Beneath a cold, blue Philadelphia sky
I hear the mechanized thunder of the leather bound boot
But I don't motion as the foot motors by
I look twice away and cut the distance
From where I am to there I'd like to be
But I'm stuck inside the neck of a fired up dream
Watching everything but never seeing me
And everyday I wake to feel my illusion
I bend my fingers and the Word still comes
And I sing praises to the man who leaves a nickle in my hand
You know the nickle's worth a quarter to the right kind of Bum.

Mealtime moves me to the basket on the street
Litter spewn from the Hi-Speed Slide
Digging thru the snow, my fingers, numb, know where to go
Looking low for that early morning find
I clutch onto the crust of a pretzel
Once soft, I think, but hard is good enough
Spotting frozen mustard on the rim inside the can
I sleeve my button with a twist and lift it off
And everyday I work to feed my illusion
I bend my fingers and the Word still comes
And I sing praises to the man who leaves a nickle in my hand
You know the nickle's worth a quarter to the right kind of Bum.

With pretzel in my mouth and mustard on my chin
I look upon the people with my happy, toothless grin
The sun is in my eyes, my eyes are in my head
My tounge's on Fire and Fire makes me sing,
"Hey you!, Look at me if you won't listen
The Word is you, the Word is me, the Word is good
Now you can't say you ain't been warned for when again the Word is born
They'll be no shelter from the skelter of It's storm
And I will pledge my socks to the nation of the world
I know that beauty can be spun even from them
They may someday clad the foot of a walking Son of Man
Stumbling humbly where He's never ever been
And on that day you'll know the strength of your illusions
You'll bend your fingers and the Word will still come
And you'll sing praises to the man who leaves a nickle in your hand
Because the nickle's worth a quarter to the right kind of Bum.

The sun completes its slide as I slip into the night
To find my spot along the echo of the glow
My ears ignore the shuffle and my eyes gaze off
And the Word reappears to keep me warm
It's on my head, under my eye and right behid me
I know that Word as well as you all know yourself
And for my time that floats by, like the circles of the sky
Circles everlast, I don't need help
And everyday we work to face my illusion
We bend my fingers and the Word still comes
And we sing praises to the man who leaves a nickle in our hands
You know the nickle's worth a quarter to the right kind of Bum.

The Split Up

I remember one sad evening in September
Started off with a walk, then a talking to clear out the air
We rapped in a line, talking love, talking friends, talking money
Talking as one, but doubled in Love's disrepair
And I forget who it was who first mentioned that maybe we'd split up
I forget who it was who then volunteered, maybe so
Maybe so, even though this ain't quite the same place that we'd come from
Coming from yesterday makes it so hard to say which way to go

I slept on the couch, Anne Marie caught a nap in the kitchen
Our bed, once a bed, now a checkpoint for all we possessed
In the morning we met in the bathroom exchanging glances
Me in my underwear and Annie's hands hiding her chest
And I forget who it was who first mentioned that maybe we'd split-up
I forget who it was who then volunteered, maybe so
Maybe so, even though this ain't quite the same place that we'd come from
Coming from yesterday makes it so hard to say which way to go

We proceeded to courting, litigating the long haul to justice
In a room made of wood, where the hammering swings down to bear
Bringing order, decorum, uplifting downtrodden, but heartless
Then in less than a lifetime a nullified life is declared

I think of her seldom, but sometimes on September evenings
Not thinking too sad, more pondering where I have been
Yesterday is today and tomorrow's the next day forever
And ever thru never, 'till unmended memories end.

Love 5X

Love is simple, rich and plain
Like a bolt of joy across a sky of pain
Is a flint and a spark and a quest for flame
Is a rose and a thorn by the very same name
Love is going to bury us all
Love will bury us all

Love is an old man begging on a step
Is a bright shinny nickel in the old man's cap
Is the tear in his eye and the mud on his face
Is the skin 'neath the paint of his masquerade
Love is going to bury us all
Love will bury us all

Love is a lesson learning everyday
You're learning when you're walking and you're learning when you stay
You learning when you gear it up, you learn to take a chance
You learn to wipe your tears and then somehow
You learn to dance, dance, dance

Love is the Garden's fabled fruit
Is a twist of fate tangled up in truths
Is the rowing of a boat on the river of Doubt
Is what my friends, Life is all about
Love is going to bury us all
Love will bury us all

Welcome To Philadelphia

Welcome to Philadelphia

Oh, and by the way,

You Suck!

Pour yourself a cheesesteak and crack another beer

Despite what you might think

We're having fun!

The Quaker City Stomp

The Quaker City fireworks crack my ears,
They splash my eyes, they make me cheer
If I don't love you, you know that's OK
''Cause Love's going to fall just like the summertime rain
Quaker City fireworks lighting up the sky
They go crack, they go splash
And if I don't love you that's OK
'Cause I'm coming back, real soon.

The Quaker City Momma's got to stop on the street
She's got the child in her bossom, the child at her feet
Child on both sides, a child behind
You know that Momma's got hope 'cause that child's got time
Quaker City Momma lighting up the sky
With her smile so sweet
She's got the child on both sides, the child behind
She's got the child at her feet,
And he's getting big

The Quaker City Poppa got the hands so fast
But maybe this deal's  going to be his last
It all depends on the way he moves
You've got to keep a steady eye when he's shifting them shoes
Quaker City Poppa  lighting up the sky
With his hands so fast
Yeah, but maybe Poppa, them golden paws, they going to break just like glass.

The Quaker City, it ain't no masquerage
She's got the tear in her eyes and the mud on her face
If I don't love you, you know that's OK
''Cause Love's going to fall just like the summertime rain
Quaker City fireworks lighting up the sky
They go crack, they go splash
And if I don't love you that's OK
"cause I'm coming back,

I said the Quaker City fireworks lighting up the sky
They go crack, they go splash
And if I don't love you that's OK
"cause I'm coming back,
Real soon.

Said When She Left

Said when she left she wasn't going to second guess

All the reasons for leaving

Said when whe left she wasn't going to second best herself into grieving

Said she thought she'd been in love to long

Said she felt like she did not belong

Said she was heading home for the summer

Said when she left she was she was sick to death

of all the poetry you wrote for her

Said when she left she was sick to death

of all of the promises you broke on her

Said she thought she'd been in love to long

Said she felt like she did not belong                     Said she's heading home for the summer

Said when she left she wasn't going to second guess

All the reasons for leaving

Said when she left she wasn't going to second best  herself into grieving

Said she thought she'd been in love to long

Said she felt like she did not belong

Said she's heading home for the summer

Twlight Serenade

In my dreams I keep loving you
In my dreams we are alive
In my dreams we are dancing
Shoulder to shoulder
Spinning off in the night

In my dreams I am holding you
In my dreams we are alive
In my dreams we are kissing
Cheek to cheek
Making love in the night

Then the sun breaks on to my face
And the tears fill my eyes
And I'm whispering out your name
Half insane
Blind and cursed by the light

In my dreams we are young again
In my dreams we are alive
In my dreams we are traveling
Crossing the continents
Flying off in the night

Take my hand as I slip away
Hold my hand for all time
Mark my dreams as they disappear
Holding near
Oh, the happier times
And when the sun breaks on to your face
And the tears fill your eyes
You'll be whispering out my name
Half insane
Blind and cursed by the light
